These old, exceedingly simple devices are still the most effective choice for some glue-ups. Curved panels built up of coopered staves, for instance, can hardly be joined any other way. Simply hammer the dogs' tapered legs into end grain on opposite sides of a joint, and the tapers draw the two pieces tightly together.
